Rock With You

“I wanna rock with you…all night…we’re gonna rock the night away.” – Michael Jackson

And that my friends is exactly what I had planned for the MJ night that was hosted by Hard Rock Café Mumbai last night. That, and a juicy burger, because currently Hard Rock is promoting its Legendary Burger Festival. Sounds good doesn't it? Alas, the night didn't pan out exactly as I had planned and I'll come to that very soon. But first, just a little bit about this popular establishment.

Hard Rock Café is a great after-work hang out and of course, a rock haven for music lovers that get to spend time with their favourite singers and take in the exciting memorabilia that surrounds them. Spacious interiors with a long bar and a stage that sits a floor above featuring bands from around the world for all to enjoy.

The menu is quite widespread consisting of American and Tex-Mex favourites like burgers, sandwiches, potato skins, chicken wings, nachos, quesadillas…the works. It also has an ‘Aamchi Mumbai’ section with a variety of curries to choose from.

Back to my eventful evening; I decided to pay HRC a visit for a little after work soiree with my besties. I booked in advance since there was a live band that was going to play Michael Jackson favourites and being a MJ fan myself, I was all in and ready to moonwalk the night away. 8pm on the dot and we were there. The band was supposed to start by 9pm but didn't come on until nearly 10pm which was tiring and when they did come on, all I can say is kudos to them for really trying hard. Half an hour of very loud music and a lot of shouting and we were out the door.

As far as the food is concerned, it was a very average meal. Infact, I was surprised at how sad my Legendary Chicken Burger turned out to be, especially considering it was burger festival time. What I was served, was a well portioned meal that consisted of a spicy chicken patty sandwiched between sweet burger buns, garnished with a couple of soggy tomatoes, cheese and yea, that’s it. No salad, no onion, no pickles nothing! And yes, they did serve fries with that but they were cold and not very fresh. The second dish of the evening was Grilled Prawns; a small sized tasteless dish with a bunch of small prawns lying on a bed of lettuce. Sauceless and flavourless. The only dish that passed and saved the evening was the serve of Nachos that we started with. Crunchy corn chips topped with warm melted cheddar, tomatoes, spring onions and jalapenos, served with tasty tangy tomato salsa.

Unfortunately, the service for the evening was a little slack as well. Our waiter forgot to bring us our second order of iced tea and infact, on forgetting that we had ordered something asked us to vacate our table because there was a waiting list. This just added to our disappointment, so we took the opportunity to pay the bill and got outta there.

To end, all I wanna say is that they didn't really care about us! ;)

That said, I do believe in second chances and I will go back to try them out again. So, singing and dancing staff at Hard Rock, I'm still waiting for you to rock my world!

Mediterranean Monsoon

Between Bombay and Pune, cafes, restaurants and bars seem to be opening up all over the place at the moment and as a keen foodie and recent blogger, one would imagine that I would be on top of these, but between revisiting the old and sampling the new, I am hardly able to keep up with this food boom that seems to be happening, but try, I do and taste, I will ;)

Anyhoo, while I was in Pune this weekend, I stumbled across one such newbie that I learned has come up about a month or two ago. So, I dragged my sister and hubs for a late luncheon date on Saturday afternoon to Mezzuna.

Mezzuna is a lovely little restaurant tucked away behind the busy complex of city point, on Dhole Patil road, an address that is home to a number of other eateries like Mainland China and Sigree to name a few.

The décor is spacious with cozy indoor seating that’s perfect for a kitty brunch and yet intimate enough for a romantic date and roomy al fresco seating, where large wicker sofas that can accommodate multiple guests are nestled between blooming champa trees (frangipani), under mini shamiana’s. A perfect setting for a warm summer’s day, drizzly monsoon afternoon or cool winter’s eve.

This all-day dining, café-style restaurant serves a mix of popular Mediterranean and European cuisines with some American favourites thrown in, using glocal (global and local) ingredients to serve items such as; assorted mezze, fresh salads, stone baked pizzas, a medley of sandwiches and burgers, main dishes like moussaka and roast lamb, a variety of pastas and risottos and of course, delicious dessert options that leave you salivating and ready to tuck in.

As we got there quite late in the afternoon, we had a choice of tables to choose from and settled for a lovely little outdoor spot where we enjoyed the powder rain and cool monsoon air that is now Pune.
Our friendly and very attentive waiter Samiran, made sure we were well taken care of…maybe a bit too well taken care of as he was always there, but that’s Indian hospitality for you.

While sipping on our sweet ‘n’ salty fresh lime sodas and munching on some freshly baked breads; which were served with butter but we missed a good olive oil and balsamic dip which would add a little more authenticity to the Mediterranean inspired food, we browsed through the menu and finally managed to choose our meals and here my lovelies is what we got:

To start off, we ordered a serve of Prawn Popcorn; plump juicy prawns coated with crispy golden fried crumbs and served with a creamy mayo dip. Popprawn perfect.

For mains, my not so hungry, not much of a foodie sister, got a serve of the Rocket, Pear and Blue cheese salad but she swapped the blue cheese for goat cheese; purple slivers of red wine poached, sweet pears on a bed of bright green spicy-fresh rocket leaves, served with rich but crumbly goat cheese and topped off with a sprinkling of caramelised walnuts and just the right amount of house dressing. A delicious combination of fresh flavours and textures. No wonder this salad has quickly become a favourite at a number of establishments across Bombay and Pune. With the right ingredients, you just can’t go wrong.

The meat-loving  hubs ordered a Teriyaki Pulled Pork Burger; tender shreds of slow-cooked barbecued pork meat that had just fallen off the bone, flavoured with a soy and ginger glaze and sandwiched between a soft sesame bun, served with a smooth mayo coleslaw, garden salad and thick potato wedges. According to my husband, “the best pork burger in town! I'll definitely be back for another”. I think I can comfortably say that he thoroughly enjoyed it.

And, last but not least, I ordered the Homemade Parpadelle with Creamy Chicken; beautifully made flat, broad noodles of pasta served with moist, juicy chunks of chicken, seasoned with tarragon and a very generous portion of parmesan-cream sauce. I did suggest to the chef that they could tone down the cream-sauce a little as there was just a tad too much, but all in all it was creamy dreamy delicious!

To end our delightful meals, we ordered a couple of coffees with a portion of the Freshly Baked Cheesecake (did I ever mention that I love baked cheesecakes? Def one of many of my favourite desserts); sweetened cream cheese with a tinge of vanilla, baked to soft-crumbly perfection, served with a tart blueberry compote. Wow! Oh was I loving it!

After our bellies were so full that we had to do the sly top-button-off move, we thanked Chef Balakrishnan Maharana, for sending out some wonderful food and promised to visit again sooner than later, to sample some other exciting dishes on the menu.

Mezzuna-Poona, definitely a must for residents and visitors alike.

Going Dutch

I just got back after a week in Amsterdam. A city that I have developed a real love for because of its sheer charm, quaint character, art culture, friendly people and ofcourse the selection of delicious foods that are available on every street and corner.

The city offers a variety of dining options from hot dog carts and burger joints, to sophisticated dining cafes and restaurants that offer everything from Asian, German, Italian and Indian, to their very own local Dutch cuisine.

Since I was there for a while for a combination of some work and more holiday, along with my mum, sister and cousin, I tried to squeeze in all I could in terms of food and am back home now, a couple of kilos heavier with no regrets at all…ok, I lie, I hate that! But if I had to go back I would have still done it no differently.

So, if you are visiting anytime soon, apart from the many museums (Amsterdam has a museum for absolutely everything! I mean it…art, handbags, beer, hash, torture, diamonds, fashion, tattoos… did I mention the hash? ;) yep everything!), interesting coffee shops of sorts, cheese havens and walking or cycling along the canals, here are the eateries that I recommend you should try:

As most cities in the west do, you'll find McDonalds and Burger Kings all over but if you’re craving a good gourmet burger, a small little café amidst the canals and cobble stoned streets of the Dam, is Burger Zaken. Friendly international staff, prompt service and a juicy burger patty in a sesame bun with cheddar, pickles, lettuce and a special homemade burger sauce. Bugerlicious! And what burger is complete without fries?! Frites are served all over the place. Thick, crunchy golden fries with tomato sauce and mayo. Mm mm mm delicious.

Another American staple that has made its presence known is the bagel. There seemed to be a bagel & coffee cafe on every other street. So we made our way to the closest one that we could find for a bruncheon bite and had to go back again for another taste, as the bagels were just great. On my first day, Tony’s NY City Bagels served up a freshly baked warm sesame bagel, with thick natural cream cheese and strawberry jam. Not very adventurous one might say given their fairly extensive menu, but when the product is simple and fresh it hits the spot nonetheless. On my second occasion I tried the chicken, avocado, lettuce and pine nut bagel-of-the-day on pumpernickel bread. Fresh as ever, delightful in taste and kept me pretty full for the most …until I walked passed Pancakes! Amsterdam.

The one thing that the Dutch are loud and proud about is their pancakes. And for good reason. Sweet flattened discs of pleasure if made well and the Dutch have mastered the art. Pancakes! Amsterdam was a cute little blue and white dressed café, nestled between the charming little boutiques in an area called Jordaan. A wafting smell of sweet Dutch pancakes came a calling and I am so glad that we went in. A large selection of sweet and savoury pancakes to offer and after aahing and umming as to what we should order, we ended up with a savoury option; a spinach and goat cheese pancake with pine nuts that was just too good to be true, followed by a couple of sweet pancakes; one with strawberries and ice cream, you cannot go wrong with that, it was yum and the other with a selection of fruit with ice cream, another one to yum about, and as you can tell from the pictures, as usual we had tucked in before I realised that I need some good pictures for the blog.

Another excellent pancake house which had the most adorable décor was De Vier Pilaren. A nutella pancake and another strawberries with ice cream pancake later, we tried the traditional Dutch poffertjes. A kind of profiterole-pancake served with any topping that you might pair with a regular pancake. We had ours with sugar and lemon curd which made our taste buds dance with happiness on tasting the flavour of the tangy, creamy lemon coupled with the sweetness of the sugar dusting. La dee da dee da :)

While we are talking about sweet delights, another Dutch special that’s a must is appleflappen, apple turnovers. Sweet cinnamon dusted stewed apples enveloped in a flaky triangle of layered buttered puff pastry. Sinful! They are available at most bakeries but the one I recommend is Café Luna. They serve up a delicious chocolate covered waffle as well which goes down great with a cup of mint brewed tea.

Appeltaart or apple pie is another popular pastry and the one at Beurs Van Berlage café which is located in the centre of Amsterdam is the best. Angela’s apple pie, served at room temperature with a generous swirl of whipped cream. A good choice with a cup of afternoon coffee.

For a fine-dining experience the restaurant that I have to recommend is Greetje. A lovely little restaurant with an old world charm that served traditional Dutch cuisine using fresh, organic ingredients. The best meal of our trip!  The restaurant is named after the proprietor’s mother, a pretty lady who apparently believed in wholesome cooking with fresh ingredients and this is just what was served up at this restaurant.

Every dish was a delight. From the Fish Profiteroles that were different but delicious; soft doughy balls of pastry filled with a delicate fish mousse, to the Braised Veal with Grits; tender succulent veal served on a bed of soft but crunchy grits, flavoured with carrots and spring onions, to the Sautéed Asparagus which was the daily special; stalks of softened white asparagus flavoured with a hollandaise sauce and served with slices of ham and boiled eggs, another unique dish that was full of flavour, each dish was more appetising than the next.

If that’s not enough, for dessert we ordered a tasting platter which had bite-sized portions of all the desserts on the menu; Raspberry Bavarois; raspberry flavoured sweetened thick cream, Liquorice ice cream; an interesting flavour which was really nice, Cinnamon Crème Brulee; tasty but a bit plain, Chocolate Beetroot Bon Bons; different and delish and Taken Apart Apple Pie; which was exactly as it was described. All in all the meal was excellent, the service was great and the night was fun-filled. Five stars from me.

I really could go on and on about the Italian food and Asian food and the cheese and the soft gooey caramel stroopwafles that you hear so much about but I think I’ll stop and let you experience that yourself.

As you can tell, this trip was a real culinary delight for me and I can only share a snippet of what this beautiful city had to offer. I hope it’s enough to make you want to go, and go you must!

As the famous painter Van Gogh once said, “Life is a journey not a destination.” So journey your way over to this capital city and do share your lovely experiences with us on this blog because I know that I am definitely going back and would love to hear your suggestions as well. :)
